Follow this order when using v2rayN for the first time; each step maps to a specific screen in the client.
A subscription is a bundle of node information and the first step most users take when setting up v2rayN. Open Subscription Group Settings in the v2rayN main window, paste the subscription URL provided by your provider, and click Update Subscription to pull all nodes in that group. Subscription URLs usually start with https; some providers also offer base64-encoded share links, which the client detects and parses automatically. After a successful update, the server list shows the nodes in the current group, each with full details such as address, port, protocol, and encryption. Once you have confirmed the count and source, move on to the next step.
Open the server list and click any node to select it. For first-time use, choose entries whose names clearly indicate the region and whose protocol is VMess or VLESS. v2rayN includes a Test Server Real Delay feature that checks node connectivity in batches; the result only reflects connectivity on your current network, not actual download speed. After selecting a node, the status bar at the bottom of the main window shows its details, including server address, port, and protocol type. Once you have confirmed the node matches its group, move on to routing settings.
Routing determines how traffic is split. v2rayN offers three modes: Bypass Mainland, Global, and Direct. Bypass Mainland sends domains and IPs in mainland China straight to the local network while proxying traffic outside China, balancing speed with compatibility for sites in mainland China; Global sends all traffic through the proxy; Direct bypasses the proxy entirely. Routing rules are customizable: in Routing Settings you can add rules by domain, IP range, or process. Rules are matched top to bottom, and the first match stops further matching.
Once system proxy is enabled, browsers and most desktop apps automatically use the proxy channel. v2rayN has an Auto Configure System Proxy toggle that writes the system proxy settings when enabled and restores them on exit. The system proxy listens on 127.0.0.1:10808 by default; some apps need this address and port configured manually. If you use a browser proxy extension, disable system proxy to avoid double proxying. If the port is occupied, change the listening port in parameter settings and restart the client for the change to take effect.
After completing the settings above, open a browser and visit a connectivity check page. If the exit IP matches the node's region, the proxy chain is working. If the connection fails, troubleshoot in this order: client logs, node connectivity, system proxy status. When the client log shows a TLS handshake failure, check the system time first; if nodes time out, try switching protocols or changing nodes; if pages load but sites in mainland China behave abnormally, check whether the routing mode is set to Bypass Mainland. Once verification passes, you can use it normally.

Project V is an open-source network tool ecosystem. Its core component, V2Ray, provides transport, routing, and multi-protocol support, and the project is maintained long-term by community volunteers. V2Ray is designed around modularity: transport protocols, routing rules, and DNS resolution can be configured independently, making it suitable for users who need fine-grained control over network behavior.
V2Fly and Xray are the two actively maintained core branches. V2Fly continues V2Ray's original architecture, while Xray builds on it with newer protocols such as REALITY and finer-grained routing. v2rayN can switch between the two, v2rayNG uses the Xray core by default, and v2flyNG targets the V2Fly core.
All three clients are released under open source licenses with public source code, maintained collaboratively by the community, and their release cadence is driven by contributors.
